The world renowned researcher Frans van Eemeren from Uni­ver­si­ty of Ams­ter­dam will vis­it Bergen and talk about: “Fal­lac­i­es as derail­ments of strate­gic manoeu­vring: Recon­nect­ing dialec­tic and rhetoric”

Frans H. van Eemeren is Pro­fes­sor of Speech Com­mu­ni­ca­tion, Argu­men­ta­tion The­o­ry and Rhetoric at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ams­ter­dam. Frans van Eemeren and Rob Groo­ten­dorst (1944–2000) are the founders of the influ­en­tial prag­ma-dialec­ti­cal argu­men­ta­tion the­o­ry. This the­o­ry sys­tem­at­i­cal­ly com­bines nor­ma­tive insights from philo­soph­i­cal dialec­tics and dia­logue log­ic with prag­mat­ic insights from speech act the­o­ry, Gricean the­o­ry and dis­course analy­sis. The prag­ma-dialec­ti­cal the­o­ry is applied in the analy­sis, eval­u­a­tion and pro­duc­tion of oral and writ­ten argu­men­ta­tive discourse.
